The South Australian Tourism Commission acknowledges the significant impact COVID-19 is having on our state’s tourism industry.


COVID-19 is creating challenges we have never faced before. The SATC has been working to provide regular up-to-date information to assist the sector, and to support operators during this period of uncertainty.


The State Government has now announced details of substantial assistance packages designed to help the tourism sector get through this as well as rebound at the other end.


Throughout this, the SATC is working with industry, ensuring our operators are front and centre in the digital space – and making sure consumers can still connect from their loungerooms, and see what SA has to offer. Our new online platform on southaustralia.com – SATV – is aimed at supporting local tourism operators and businesses who, due to the extraordinary impact of COVID-19 have restructured how they operate and are now offering new innovative ways to still purchase from them, experience their product and support them, from the confines of your home.


Our Facebook page is also running the active #SeeSouthAustraliaFromHome group, which again offers businesses a way to stay in touch with their customers and keep engaged during coming weeks and months.


Our tourism sector is worth almost $8 billion to the state’s economy – and employs 38,900 people – so we are doing everything we can to make sure we get through this together.

Regional Funding Support Program

The SATC will allocate additional grant funding of $10,000 to regional tourism organisations (RTOs), to be provided immediately. The additional grant funding is designed to assist RTOs maintain their brand and viability as well as assist tourism businesses in their regions. The SATC has an existing program that provides RTOs with $20,000 annually towards marketing campaigns on a matching dollar for dollar basis. The $10,000 provided by the SATC is in addition to the existing funding, but funding does not need to be matched by the RTOs. The RTOs will determine the best use of the funds for their individual regions in consultation with operators. Funding is ex GST and valid until June 30, 2021.


Resilience and Rebound Project

We understand that the Australian bushfires, and now COVID-19, have had a significant impact on tourism operators in South Australia. Measures introduced to reduce the severity of the pandemic have stemmed the flow of tourists to South Australia from overseas, and now interstate and intrastate. This translates to an extended period of no customers for many tourism operators, in addition to uncertainty as to when these measures will be lifted.


We recognise that the success of South Australia’s tourism industry in the future depends on its tourism operators. The support which businesses receive during the COVID-19 crisis (or lack thereof) could affect the viability of their operations in the longer term.


The SATC has initiated a program to provide business support for South Australian tourism operators to help work through the COVID-19 crisis and have the necessary tools they’ll need to help with recovery post event crisis. The content is intended to assist the wide spectrum of business involved in the visitor economy including tourism operators, accommodation providers and the hospitality sector.


The program will contain various elements including fact sheets and video tutorials to be accessible via the SATC corporate website over the coming weeks. These tools will provide highly relevant tourism related information to assist the visitor economy with immediate challenges facing it as well as a focus on post crisis.


Content includes the following;

  2. Managing banks and liabilities
  3. Managing your landlord and/or tenant
  4. Managing your cashflow
  5. Managing your staff
  6. Customer engagement during COVID-19
  7. How to come back online.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement regarding significant funding for mental health programs and support for mental health providers, the SATC has compiled a list of resources and links available.


During these difficult times, taking care of mental health and wellbeing is especially important. If you are concerned about your own mental health, or that of a family member, friend, or colleague please refer to one of the following services, available 24/7, for support.


Health Direct Mental Health Services


The State Government has also set up a new support line to provide a localised service for South Australians who need additional mental health support as a result of COVID-19. The service will offer video and phone support and is staffed by trained Lifeline counsellors. The support line will be staffed from 8am to 8pm and can be reached at 1800 632 753.


Maintaining Positive Mental Health

Together with mental health organisations, experts and leaders, the National Mental Health Commission has developed #InThisTogether – a national conversation sharing practical tips online to support the mental health and wellbeing of Australians during COVID-19.
